One of the great things about Tumblr is that people use it for just about every conceivable kind of expression. People being people, though, that means that Tumblr sometimes gets used for things that are just wrong. We are deeply committed to supporting and defending our users’ freedom of speech,…
The All-New Scale of the Universe
Guys, I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly. What you’re about to play with is going to blow your brains right out of the back of your head. Proceed with caution. Abandon all productivity ye who enter here.
Cary and Michael Huang present an updated edition of the “Scale of the Universe” interactive web portal. In it, you can zoom from quarks to cells to planets to the scale of the entire known cosmos, complete with accurate powers of ten. You can learn more about the objects you encounter by clicking on any of them.
Of course, words alone can’t capture how awesome and fun this is to play with, so I made a little screen-capture video so you can experience what the journey into the infinite will feel like when you go play.
Perspective.

Rhetoric can be basically defined as the art of persuasion. As we enter into a presidential election year here in the United States, the majority of our media’s content will swell and recede on the tides of such men and women seeking to persuade, pull and direct us towards their intended purposes. Tonight, President Obama will give the State of the Union, and already Mitt Romney is out with his “prebuttal” attack. On the drive home today from the Farm, catching up on the day’s news, I suddenly was nearly sick as my mind began anticipating many, many months of this.
This is not a post to revile the candidates, the political process, or even give my personal political opinion—no—this is a statement of subjectivity. In anticipation of what is to come in this election, based what has gone on before, and the crazy, ever-increasing negative political banter, I shudder at how much the rhetoric will undoubtably cover social issues that make up the fabric of many of our lives.
The political, and at times religious, rhetoric will flow from men determined to persuade us towards their party’s agenda. Consequently, it’s the talk about us like we’re not even in the room, that will drive me absolutely nuts. Millions live disadvantaged and oppressed in our country, whether by bonds of other’s or their own making, and although their experiences can be, I guess, lumped into categories, they are still subjects living their lives—not statistics, or tools for other’s gain.
You hold our hearts, Jesus. You hold the world in your hands. All praise and glory and honor is unto you, and you alone.
We are not objects of your religious or political rhetoric.
